What should you expect with cosmetic procedures for men?

If you opt to undergo a cosmetic procedure after your initial consultation, Dr. Balinger will let you know what to expect. Most plastic surgery procedures involve three basic steps:

  • Anesthesia: The type of anesthesia will depend on the procedure you are undergoing. Some procedures are performed with local anesthetic only. For others, you may have intravenous sedation and local anesthesia. For some procedures, general anesthesia is required.
  • Incision: Most plastic surgery procedures require incisions through which the treatment area is addressed. In our practice, surgical incisions are carefully placed to minimize visible scarring.
  • Closure: When treatment is complete, the surgeon closes the incision and a bandage or dressing is applied.

How much recovery time will I need?

Recovery times can vary widely, depending on the procedure performed. For example, recovery time after rhinoplasty (nose reshaping) is approximately one week. It may take 10 to 14 days before you are presentable after eyelid surgery. You should be able to return to work and normal activities within one week after chin augmentation. Your unique healing abilities are also a factor in recovery time after you undergo a plastic surgery procedure.

What are the most popular plastic surgery procedures for men?

According to an American Society of Plastic Surgeons article, the most commonly requested plastic surgeries for men include the following procedures:

  • Eyelid surgery: Signs of aging in the eyes can add years to your appearance. Eyelid surgery can help correct droopy upper eyelids, loose hanging skin, brows that hang over the upper eyelids, tear troughs, and bulging fat pads below the eyes.
  • Rhinoplasty: The nose plays a significant role in the proportions of the entire face. A properly performed nose job can improve shape without feminizing the nose and help balance facial features.
  • Neck lift: This surgery is performed to remove excess skin and fat in the neck that may be obscuring your jawline. A neck lift can not only improve the appearance of the neck and jawline but also make wearing dress shirts and ties more comfortable.
  • Liposuction: This is a contouring tool, not a weight loss technique. Liposuction is designed to remove unwanted pockets of excess fat that do not respond to diet and exercise.
  • Gynecomastia surgery: Excess fat and skin on the chest can have a feminizing effect. Surgical and liposuction techniques can be combined in gynecomastia surgery to achieve a more masculine chest.
