Am I a Candidate for a Mommy Makeover?

A mommy makeover is a set of body contouring procedures to restore – or enhance – a woman’s pre-pregnancy figure. You may be an ideal candidate for this procedure if:

  • You have finished having children
  • You have waited at least six months since having your last-child
  • You have sagging breasts after pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • You have accumulated fat or saggy skin on your abdomen or another body area
  • You are close to your ideal weight
  • You are in good emotional and physical health
  • You have realistic expectations and understand the procedures, recovery, and expected results

During your consultation for a mommy makeover, Dr. Balinger will listen to you and examine your problem areas to determine the best way to enhance your look. Because this entails a combination of surgical procedures, women must wait at least six months after giving birth before considering this treatment. This is important to ensure you have fully recovered from pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. A mommy makeover is a customized cosmetic treatment with a high satisfaction rating, and every woman will have a unique surgical plan. Some may need only liposuction, while others may require several surgical procedures to restore the body and breasts.  The America Society of Plastic Surgeons has additional information if required.

Patient Testimonials

How much does a mommy makeover cost?

Pricing for a mommy makeover in Houston may vary considerably from patient to patient, as each client will undergo a set of procedures uniquely tailored to their goals and anatomy. Factors such as the surgeon’s fees, facility fees, anesthesia fees, and postoperative garment fees will all affect the final price. On the low end, a mommy makeover can cost around $8,500, and on the high end, it can cost up to $18,500. These are just estimates, as every woman is different, and some may opt for total rejuvenation from head to toe.

While pricing is always a factor in your choice of plastic surgeon, it’s important to recognize that you get what you pay for. Researching a surgeon’s training, credentials, experience, skill, reputation, and artistry is an excellent way to safeguard your health and ensure balanced, natural-looking results.

What procedures are included in a custom mommy makeover?

Dr. Christopher Balinger is uniquely positioned to recommend the best combination procedures for mothers. This is often possible after your initial discussion at the surgeon’s Houston office. Depending on your unique needs and goals for your figure, you may need a combination of the following procedures:

Breast augmentation

Your breasts may have lost volume and appear deflated and saggy. Breast augmentation restores a youthful, plump look to breasts that have been affected by pregnancy and breastfeeding.  Breast implants (saline or silicone implants) or natural fat transfer can be employed to restore volume. In some cases, breast augmentation with a lift may be needed.

Liposuction

Liposuction is a less invasive plastic surgery procedure that can remove stubborn pockets of fat from the belly, buttocks, back, hips, thighs, or other parts of the body. Tiny incisions are placed, and a special suction tube known as a cannula is inserted to extract excess fat. Modern hi-tech devices such as laser ultrasonic machines may also be employed. This procedure is appropriate for women who still have resilient skin.

Breast lift

Breast lift surgery is also known as mastopexy. This procedure corrects deflated or sagging breasts to restore a perky, lifted appearance. It involves removing excess breast skin and raising the breasts to a youthful position on the chest wall. This procedure may include repositioning or resizing over-stretched nipples and areolas. A breast lift may be performed alone or in combination with breast augmentation to achieve greater volume and a youthful lift.

ThermiVa

Vaginal childbirth usually has a negative effect on vaginal laxity and overall vaginal appearance. To address this issue, plastic surgeons offer a non-surgical procedure that is referred to as ThermiVa, often contrasted with a labiaplasty. The goal is to restore sensual feelings by tightening and toning the vaginal lips. This device uses heat energy to shrink excess skin in the vaginal area as well as tighten the tissues for improved sensation and a youthful appearance.

Tummy tuck

Also known as abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck is one of the most common procedures of a custom mommy makeover. A tummy tuck will remove any excess skin and fat in the abdominal area in order to achieve a flatter and firmer belly contour. This plastic surgery includes repairing and strengthening abdominal muscles that may have been separated or loosened during pregnancy. In addition to tightening the tummy, an abdominoplasty can typically remove or reduce the size of stretch marks on the lower abdomen.

Lower body lift

Your mommy makeover may also include a lower body lift. This plastic surgery aims to address sagging lower torso skin and restoring a sculpted figure. The plastic surgeon will work to reshape the lower body to a slimmer, more youthful pre-baby appearance.

What should I expect from the mommy makeover procedure?

A mommy makeover is an outpatient procedure performed at Dr. Balinger’s in-office operating suite or, in some cases, in an accredited surgical facility in Houston, TX. General anesthesia or intravenous sedation will be used to ensure your comfort during your mommy makeover.

The precise surgical technique used will be determined by the specific procedure(s) that you need to restore your pre-baby body. Dr. Balinger takes care to minimize incisions and deliver the best possible outcome and reduce the risk of complications or excessive scarring. If a tummy tuck is being performed, then the surgeon will place two drains to help drain away excess fluid. The duration of a mommy makeover will reflect the number of procedures performed in a single surgery.

After Dr. Balinger has crafted a custom treatment plan for you, he will let you know how to prepare for the surgery. You will be asked to stop taking some medication and herbal supplements that can increase your risk of bleeding. Smoking is also forbidden in the weeks before the surgery because it can increase the risk of complications and impair healing. We will ensure you are fully prepared for the day of your surgery and will work closely with you, so all you need for your surgery and recovery is in place.

Once the treatment is complete, we will monitor your vitals as you regain awareness and will release you to return home under the care of another adult. Some patients may need to stay overnight for a day or two. Arrange a family member or friend to transport you home and to stay with you for the first few days of your recovery.

What is Recovery Like After A Mommy Makeover in Houston?

A mommy makeover may be a major surgery, and you will need to set time aside for a full recovery. It is normal to expect bruising and swelling in the early phase of your recovery. You will have prescription pain medication to keep you comfortable and a course of antibiotics to prevent infections. The recovery time varies based on the extent of your procedure, as well as your natural rate of healing.

On average, Dr. Balinger’s patients resume routine daily activities within two to four weeks. You will be asked to refrain from strenuous activities and heavy lifting until given approval by Dr. Balinger. The enhanced look of your body is fully visible at about eight weeks. It is important to strictly adhere to the surgeon’s post-op instructions and attend follow-up visits in order to ensure a speedy recovery from your mommy makeover in Houston.

FAQ

How long will mommy makeover results last?

By taking care of yourself with good nutrition and eating right, the results of your mommy makeover may last for several years. Dr. Balinger advises his patients that aging, weight changes, and future pregnancies will change the results of your procedure. He recommends that you plan your mommy makeover for at least one year after having your last child. You should strive to reach your ideal weight during that year after having your baby.

When is the best time to get a Mommy Makeover?

If you are done having children and plan to have no more in the future, wait until at least six months after delivery to ensure your body is fully recovered.

Will there be scars?

With any surgical procedure that involves incisions, there will be scarring. Dr. Balinger will use precise, exact incision locations to minimize and hide scars.

How do you sleep after a mommy makeover?

It is often suggested that women sleep in a recliner after surgery rather than a bed. This can help keep the breasts elevated and the stomach slightly bent. It is also easier for the patient to get up and lie back down, putting less pressure on the incisions. If patients choose to sleep in a bed, they should sleep on their backs supported by multiple pillows. More pillows can be placed under the knees to keep the hips flexed.

How do I prepare for a mommy makeover?

Before a mommy makeover, you should be at or close to your ideal weight. Weight fluctuations can compromise the appearance of your results. If you do smoke, make sure to quit at least 14 days before surgery. Smoking can significantly impair the body’s natural healing process. You should schedule a helper to drive you home and assist you for the first 24 hours after surgery. You should also arrange for childcare ahead of time. Get your prescriptions filled early, and create a space at home stocked with everything you will need to be comfortable and entertained.

When can I shower after a mommy makeover?

Patients should postpone showering for at least 48 hours after their mommy makeover, as this is how long it takes for the incisions to close completely. Showering too quickly may reopen the wounds and lead to infection or other complications.

Do I have to lose weight before a mommy makeover?

The best advice is to be at a stable weight before surgery that you are comfortable with and that you can see yourself maintaining long-term. It’s important to note that a mommy makeover is not a weight-loss procedure. Rather, it will remove excess skin and stubborn fat, toning the physique for a more youthful look.
