What Is an Extended Tummy Tuck?

An extended tummy tuck is a surgical cosmetic procedure used to tighten the midsection by removing excess skin and fat and tightening the abdominal muscles. The extended tummy tuck is similar to a traditional tummy tuck, but in addition to addressing the abdomen, the procedure addresses the flanks and lower back as well.

Benefits of an Extended Tummy Tuck

An extended tummy tuck can offer several significant benefits, including:

  • Slimmer, more defined midsection
  • Reduces excess skin and fat around the midsection
  • Provides more complete results than a traditional tummy tuck
  • Increased wardrobe options
  • Increased self-confidence
  • Tightens loose abdominal muscles

What Should I Expect During the Surgery?

If you’re considering an extended tummy tuck, you can start the process by having a consultation with Dr. Balinger. He will discuss the procedure with you, answer all of your questions, and help you determine if an extended tummy tuck is right for you. Then, he’ll create a personalized treatment plan that matches up with your unique cosmetic goals.

Typically, an extended tummy tuck will be performed as an outpatient procedure using general anesthesia. To begin, Dr. Balinger will make an incision above the pubic hairline that wraps around to your lower back. He will then remove excess skin and fat based on your unique treatment plan. If needed, he will also use sutures to tighten your abdominal muscles. He will then reposition and secure the remaining tissue before closing the incision and applying bandages. In total, the procedure should take around three to five hours to complete.

How Long Is the Recovery Time?

After your extended tummy tuck, Dr. Balinger will give you thorough instructions to ensure a smooth healing process. You’ll need someone to drive you home after your surgery and, ideally, stay with you for the first night or two. During your recovery, you’ll have to wear a compression garment, and you’ll likely experience some bruising, swelling, and discomfort.

Most patients can return to work roughly two weeks after an extended tummy tuck. You will need to wait approximately six to eight weeks to resume strenuous exercise and potentially longer for abdominal workouts.

What Results Can I Expect?

The full results of your extended tummy tuck will appear gradually as your swelling subsides. It can take as long as six months to a year to see the complete effects of the procedure.
