What Does the Procedure Involve, and how Long Will it Take?

  • Labiaplasty is an outpatient procedure performed in our office.
  • Local anesthesia is used to numb the treatment area. General anesthesia is not needed for labia reduction.
  • Dr. Balinger carefully removes small amounts of tissue from the labia minora or labia majora, using a special surgical device known as Iris scissors. The goal is to reshape your labia to achieve the desired, aesthetically pleasing outcome.
  • Dr. Balinger uses advanced surgical techniques to ensure nerves in this area and sexual sensation are preserved.
  • The incisions are closed with sutures.
  • Labiaplasty in Houston may take up to one hour to perform, depending on the complexity of your labia reduction.

Will I need much recovery time?

You will need someone to drive you home and help take care of you after labiaplasty. Recovery times can vary, but you should be able to return to normal activities within a week. Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activity as instructed by Dr. Balinger. You can expect some bruising and swelling in the treatment area. You will be given pain medication and antibiotics to help prevent infection. Be sure to attend follow-up visits and adhere to post-op instructions for a smoother recovery. Our office is available to answer your questions and provide the support you need.

What can labiaplasty do for my look, and my feelings of confidence?

Women choose to have labiaplasty for aesthetic, emotional, and functional reasons. Having large labia may make a woman feel self-conscious during sex or cause discomfort. Women with large labia also have chafing and “camel toe” issues when wearing clothing. Benefits of labiaplasty surgery include the following:

  • May reduce inflammation and pain during intercourse
  • Reduces chafing
  • Helps you feel more comfortable in intimate situations
  • Corrects asymmetry and other natural abnormalities

How do I prepare for labiaplasty?

Once Dr. Balinger has created a customized treatment plan for you, he will let you know how to prepare for surgery. You will be asked to stop taking certain medications and herbal supplements that can increase your risk of bleeding. If you smoke, you will be asked to stop in the weeks before the surgery, as smoking can increase the risk of complications and impair healing. Dr. Balinger will tell you what to do on the night before the surgery, and what supplies you will need to have in place for a smooth recovery.

What are the different surgical techniques for labiaplasty?

Plastic surgeons have three different techniques that they can use to perform labiaplasty:

Trim technique

This is the simplest type of labiaplasty. The surgeon creates a small vertical incision along the length of the inner vaginal lips. This can be done using either a laser or scalpel. Once the incision is made, the next step is to remove excess vaginal tissue and reshape the area as required. The incisions are then closed using stitches.

Wedge technique

This entails removing excess tissue via the center of the labia minora. The surgeon creates an incision to remove tissue from the thickest section of the inner labia. Once this is done, the detached sides are stitched back together. One of the biggest advantages of this approach is that it results in less visible scarring.

De-epithelialization technique

This method involves removing tissue lining the vaginal lips. The surgeon extracts some labia minora lining tissue, then closes the treatment area with incisions. This is similar to the trim approach, except that inner labia tissue is removed, not the outer edge. The procedure results in shrinking of the labia.

FAQ

Why have labiaplasty surgery?

Many women experience adverse changes due to childbirth and aging. The labia minora may be hanging, misshapen, or disproportionately large. This can cause embarrassment and discomfort during sexual activities. Overly hanging labia can also rub against undergarments and trigger discomfort while you are going about your daily activities. Labiaplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure that aims to reshape the inner and outer lips of the vagina for improved comfort. Women who undergo this plastic surgery report experiencing higher levels of sexual confidence, enhanced pleasure, improved vaginal aesthetics, and the ability to wear tight-fitting clothing.

How do I know if labiaplasty is the right option for me?

During your labiaplasty consultation in Houston, TX, Dr. Balinger will ask questions and review your medical history to learn more about your health. He will also examine your genitals before moving forward to the next step. This initial consultation, offered free of charge, is an opportunity to learn more about what the treatment entails and what you can expect from the procedure. Dr. Balinger is uniquely positioned to recommend the best labiaplasty method for you. He will be happy to discuss the pros and cons of each approach during your consultation at his Houston office.

What is involved in post-op care after labiaplasty?

Dr. Balinger may use dissolvable sutures for your labia reduction, or you may need to return to our office to have your sutures removed. You may need to soak the vaginal area in warm water to promote healing and manage swelling. You will need to clean the treatment area and keep it dry to prevent infection and other complications. Avoid rubbing the vaginal area with a towel or toilet paper, as this may pull or break the sutures. Tight-fitting undergarments or shorts can help prevent chafing or pulling against the stitches. Dr. Balinger will schedule follow-ups to monitor your progress.

How long will results last with labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty results are enduring. However, the genitalia may change due to aging, weight changes, and pregnancy.
