Is it time to do something about your nose?

Also known as nose reshaping, rhinoplasty is cosmetic surgery to alter and reconstruct the nose for cosmetic or functional reasons. You may be an ideal candidate for a rhinoplasty procedure if you:

  • Are unhappy with your noses appearance
  • Suffered injury or a trauma-related nasal deformity and need it to be corrected
  • Are self-conscious about a nose that is crooked or misshapen
  • Are dissatisfied with the size of your nose
  • Have humps, depressions, or other aesthetic imperfections you want corrected
  • Have a positive outlook and realistic expectations about the outcome of rhinoplasty plastic surgery

How long will I need to be away from school or work?

Recovery after a closed nose job tends to be shorter than with open rhinoplasty. You can expect some bruising, swelling, and discomfort. You will be given pain medication to reduce discomfort and antibiotics to help prevent infection. Your nose is covered with a splint to keep the cartilage and soft tissue in the correct position. Do not attempt to breathe through your nose and avoid blowing your nose. You can expect to resume normal activities in approximately two weeks. Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for six weeks. Swelling and discomfort could take several months to resolve completely.

What are the benefits of rhinoplasty?

There are different reasons for undergoing a rhinoplasty. For some, it is to enhance facial appearance and self-confidence. For others, it is to change the size or structure of the nose to correct breathing problems. Regardless of the reason, there are unique benefits to this procedure:

  • Repair a broken nose: The nose can be broken through blunt injury or road accidents. Repairing the nasal structure with rhinoplasty can help alleviate the pain and restore the pre-injury appearance of the nose.
  • Address snoring problems: For many people, snoring is a difficult challenge to deal with. Most people use over-the-counter products that only provide temporary relief. An experienced plastic surgeon can perform a nose job to address snoring, leading to better sleep and a higher quality of life.
  • Restore facial symmetry: If you have a nose that is too narrow or too wide in relation to your facial structure, rhinoplasty can help you restore symmetry and balance. A plastic surgeon can work to reshape your nose in line with your unique desires.
  • Correct birth defects: Nasal deformities such as curves, lumps, or an underdeveloped nose may lead to children being bullied and feeling self-conscious with other children. Rhinoplasty surgery repairs the nasal structure and improves appearance, so your child can feel self-confident.
  • Improve confidence: One of the main reasons people have nose surgery is to correct cosmetic imperfections with which they are generally unhappy. After rhinoplasty, many patients have enhanced self-image and higher self-esteem. Cosmetic rhinoplasty can help you resolve aesthetic issues, so you feel more confident about yourself.
  • Improve breathing: Some people suffer from long-term breathing problems because of the shape or structure of the nose. Rhinoplasty cosmetic surgery can help alter the nasal structure to alleviate congenital or long-term breathing problems.
  • Solve sinus problems: Headaches, sinus pressure, and constant nasal congestion can mean significant pain and daily discomfort. Rhinoplasty can help support drooping cartilage and open up nasal passages, allowing you to breath better and resolve chronic sinus problems.

Rhinoplasty is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgeries. In 2019, there were more than 207,000 of these procedures done in the United States alone. While most patients are generally happy with the results, the goal is to work with a skilled plastic surgeon to achieve the best possible outcome.

What are the different types of rhinoplasty?

Dr. Balinger may use any of several different rhinoplasty techniques to suit your requirements and goals for surgery.

  • Closed rhinoplasty – This is a nose reshaping technique in which incisions are created via the nostrils. The surgeon augments, reshapes, or rearranges the cartilage and nasal tissues to achieve the desired appearance. Once reshaping is complete, Dr. Balinger closes the incisions and covers the treatment area. Closed rhinoplasty may be recommended if you only require minor improvements in the appearance of your nose.
  • Open rhinoplasty – This more intensive type of rhinoplasty surgery aims to significantly restructure the nasal anatomy. The surgeon creates a small incision between the nostrils to gain a wider view of internal nasal structures. The next step is to peel back the skin to reveal the internal structures. Bone and cartilage are manipulated, and tissue is reshaped in line with the goals of surgery, then the incision is closed and bandaged. To reduce visible scarring, incisions created during open rhinoplasty tend to be very small (approximately 5mm in length).
  • Revision rhinoplasty – This procedure, also known as secondary rhinoplasty, is designed to correct an unsatisfactory outcome of an earlier nose job. It is a complex procedure that requires the artistic eye of a highly experienced plastic surgeon. Dr. Balinger will carefully review the original surgery and create a customized plan to achieve the desired outcome. Revision rhinoplasty may be performed as either an open or a closed procedure.
  • Nonsurgical rhinoplasty – If you want the benefits of a nose job without undergoing invasive surgery, nonsurgical rhinoplasty may be the answer. Also known as nonsurgical nose reshaping, this technique uses non-invasive treatments, such as injectable fillers, to change the angle of the nasal tip, smooth out sharp angles, and restore nasal symmetry. Typically, nonsurgical rhinoplasty only offers temporary relief and can only address minor cosmetic issues.

Dr. Christopher Balinger is uniquely positioned to recommend the best type of rhinoplasty procedure for you. He is happy to discuss the pros and cons of each approach during your consultation at our Houston plastic surgery office.

FAQ

What should I do to prepare for a nose job?

Dr. Balinger creates a customized treatment plan for you, then lets you know how to prepare for surgery. You may be asked to stop taking certain medications or herbal supplements that could increase your risk of bleeding. Smoking is also prohibited in the weeks before the surgery, as it can increase the risk of complications and impair healing. Dr. Balinger will let you know what to do on the night before the surgery, and what supplies to have on hand for a smooth recovery.

Why have nose reshaping surgery?

The look of your nose has a significant effect on your overall facial appearance. Many people have nasal humps, bumps, bulbous tips, widened nose, or other aesthetic imperfections that negatively impact their looks. Some structural problems, such as large turbinates (shell-shaped networks within nasal passages), deviated septum, or valve collapse, can lead to breathing problems. Rhinoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure to reshape the nose for both cosmetic and structural reasons. Dr. Balinger may recommend a nose job to correct:

  • Nostrils that are out of proportion with the nose (too large or too small)
  • Bumps or crookedness
  • Upturned or downturned tip
  • Disproportionate width

How is a rhinoplasty performed?

Dr. Balinger uses two approaches to rhinoplasty. The open rhinoplasty technique is used for more complex cases in which the inner structures of cartilage and bone need to be modified. The technique involves making an incision in the soft tissue between the nostrils and lifting the skin away from the nose. With the closed technique, all surgical steps are performed through the nostrils. Closed rhinoplasty is most appropriate for correcting smaller bumps and concerns with the orientation and size of the nose tip.

How do I know if I am candidate for rhinoplasty?

During your initial rhinoplasty consultation, Dr. Balinger will ask questions and review your medical history to learn more about your health. He will also examine your nose and face before letting you know if this surgical procedure is recommended for you. Your initial consultation is free of charge. It gives you an opportunity to learn more about what rhinoplasty entails, and what you can expect from the procedure.

How long will my results last after rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty results are long-lasting. Surgical changes made to your nose in a rhinoplasty procedure are designed to be enduring. Results with nonsurgical rhinoplasty are temporary.

How much does a nose job cost?

Nose jobs prices can vary dramatically, depending on the extent of treatment. The average cost of rhinoplasty is $6,000 to $10,000. Your cost is based on the treatment plan developed during your consultation. Most health insurance will only cover a nose job if it is being performed to address functional problems or defects resulting from injury or disease. Dr. Balinger offers free initial consultations at our offices in Houston and Conroe, in addition to financing options for our patients.
